A GUIDE FOR LONG ISLAND BUSINESS OWNERS

How much should you spend on Google Ads?

By Jillian Hendler · October 5, 2026 · 3-minute read

You’re ready to get more customers. But before you put money into Google Ads, you want to know: how much is enough—and how do you avoid wasting it?

There isn’t one budget that makes sense for every Long Island business. The useful starting point is what you sell, where you want customers to come from, and what happens after someone clicks.

Why the same budget buys different results

With a typical Google Search campaign, you pay when someone clicks your ad. Click prices vary, so two businesses spending the same amount may get very different amounts of traffic.

A repair company targeting urgent searches across Nassau County is competing in a different market from a boutique promoting a specific product. Even within one business, searches for different services can have different costs.

Google Keyword Planner can help estimate searches and advertising costs for the services and locations you’re considering. It’s a starting point, not a promise of customers.

Choose a focused starting point

Before picking a number, answer three questions:

  1. What do you want more of? Choose a specific service, product or appointment rather than advertising everything at once.
  2. Where are your best customers? Start with places you can realistically serve. A bigger service area isn’t automatically a better one.
  3. What should the visitor do? Make calling, requesting a quote or buying straightforward on the page your ad leads to.

A focused test gives you a clearer picture of what your money is doing. If the budget only buys a handful of relevant clicks, it may take longer to learn anything useful.

A click is only the beginning

Someone searching for a specific service expects to find that service quickly. If your ad takes them to a general homepage where they have to hunt for details, you’ve paid for a visit that may never become an inquiry.

Match the page to the ad. Explain the offer, show useful information about your business, and make the next step easy—especially on a phone.

Know what your results are actually costing

Look beyond how many people clicked. How many genuine inquiries came in? How many became customers? Were they asking for the work you want?

For example, $600 in ad spend divided by six qualified inquiries is $100 per inquiry. Whether that works depends on how many become customers and the profit those customers bring. Include management costs when judging the full investment.
